New Energy Labels for light sources

From September 1, 2021 the new EU regulations on energy labeling of light sources has entered into force.

The most important novelty is the rescaling of energy efficiency classes from G to A (from the less to the most efficient class) and that it is compulsory to show this new label on the package. As a consequence, A+ and A++ classes of the old labels have now disappeared since they did not give any clear information about the real efficiency of a product.

    Example of new energy label.

The calculation of the energy class is based on an energy efficient index (EEI) that takes into account many factors such as the kind of light source, whether the light is directional or not, whether it is directly connected to the power grid or to an independent power supply system, if it is possible to change the light colour, etc.

The label must also includes a clear visible QR code allowing both users and control authorities to access all kind of information on the light sources registered by the manufacturer or importer in the EPREL (European Product Registry for Energy Labelling) database.

From this time onwards companies are required to provide transparent and truthful data on their products to make them easily accessible to all EU citizens. The main goal is to provide the consumer with a clearer and detailed information in order to choose the most efficient product.
